September 02 • 12:33, 2024

Narek Babayan, r/s ensign grew up in Sevan, from a young age decided to become a water rescuer and followed his dream.

Thenceforth he was recognized as the best water rescuer of 2023.

He told in a conversation with us that there were no difficulties or issues at work. The only issue was the worry and longing of family members. "It occurs when we spend days or weeks away from home, working at the crime scene", he said. He is straightforward: if he takes a vacation with his family, it’s always to a place without any water. He finds it impossible to relax by the water’s edge as he remains constantly vigilant, always ready to save a life if necessary.

The commander of the Special Water Rescue Squad of the Gegharkunik Regional Rescue Department told us that Narek Babayan is able to quickly and correctly navigate difficult situations, he performs any task responsibly and conscientiously.

"Special water rescue squad diver, r/s ensign Narek Yuriki Babayan is a hard-working and conscientious young man, he possesses professional skills, as well as the equipment and tools available in the squad", said Armen Chzmachyan, commander of the Special Water Rescue Squad of the Gegharkunik Regional Rescue Department.

Narek Babayan was encouraged not only by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but also by other departments. Particularly, he was awarded the "Gratitude" medal by the President of the Republic of Armenia in 2017. He received certificates of honor from the Ministry of Defense and letters of thanks from the Governor of Gegharkunik and the Mayor of Gavar.

According to his friend Gevorg Badalyan, throughout his service, Narek Babayan prioritizes the safety of his colleagues before considering his own well-being.

"I have known Narek since 2019. He is a wonderful colleague, a role model and a good person. We participated in search and rescue operations jointly, he works very compassionately and his work is dedication".

The best diver of last year recalls his first life-saving experience vividly. "It was with an 11-year-old boy who had dived after a ball and didn’t resurface before we arrived. I jumped in from behind, and we managed to pull him ashore. We gave him first aid and managed the drainage... I’ll never forget that moment".

According to Narek, receiving thanks from the relatives of those he’s saved is the most meaningful recognition for his activity.

Being acknowledged as the best water rescuers is gratifying, but it doesn't change the nature or style of the activity. He will keep saving lives today and tomorrow, as always.
