Training on flood behavior guidelines to enhance public preparedness

According to the order of the Director of the Rescue Service - Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Kamo Tsutsulyan various training sessions, seminars and public awareness events were organized and conducted throughout the country in January by the departments of the Rescue Service. These activities aimed at preventing the occurrence of floods and enhancing public preparedness regarding them.

The floods as natural disasters have always been among the challenges faced by humanity, requiring special preparedness and the dissemination of relevant knowledge among the population. They often cause significant damage to communities, infrastructure and material assets. Therefore, raising awareness among students and pupils about public safety is considered a crucial and primary task, particularly in educational institutions.

The primary goal of the events organized by the Rescue Service is to educate and inform the population as much as possible about the correct behavior before, during, and after floods, thereby contributing to their increased preparedness.

For this purpose, in January, the Yerevan and Regional Rescue Departments of the Rescue Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs organized and conducted training sessions on "Behavior guidelines during and after floods" and "Warning sirens" in about 120 educational institutions.

The purposes of the training sessions as follows:

  • Raise public awareness about the dangers of floods and the potential risks they pose;
  • Develop a structured and appropriate behavioral response in case of floods among students and pupils in educational institutions;
  • Provide information on warning signals and the correct methods of their application;
  • Equip citizens with essential knowledge on implementing safety measures, organizing evacuations and maintaining composure;
  • Conduct practical training sessions in collaboration with the Rescue Service and other relevant structures to ensure effective actions after a flood.

Continuing the series of activities aimed at enhancing public preparedness, the RS regional departments, specifically the working groups of Armavir, Gegharkunik, Kotayk, Shirak and Tavush Regional Rescue Departments have also conducted several other initiatives. These include workshops on population protection and civil protection issues, staff exercises on "Organization and implementation of civil defense measures during the transition from peacetime to martial law" special tactical drills on "Organization and implementation of firefighting and evacuation in educational institutions" and training sessions on "Organization and implementation of shelter of the personnel in case of an “Air-raid” warning siren". Additionally, awareness-raising activities were conducted on fire prevention, land resource conservation, environmental protection and fire safety regulations. Studies were carried out in fire-prone areas within the forest zones of "Dilijan National Park" SNCO and Ijevan municipality. Awareness efforts also focused on the damages caused by burning dry agricultural grassland and the importance of its prevention.
