On September 27, at 17:07, an emergency call was received by 112 Operative Management Center of the MIA that an electrical substation had been on fire on Tsitsernakaberd Highway.

Eleven fire units from the Fire and Rescue Squads, the duty group from the Management Division for Firefighting and Rescue Activities of Yerevan Rescue Department, the duty group from Psychological Assistance and Medical Care Provision Department of the Rescue Service of the MIA of RA dispatched to the scene.

"Due to the complexity of the fire, the emergency level was successively raised: initially declared as “1 BIS”, it was subsequently upgraded to “Number 2” and then to “Number 3” as a high-level emergency. In accordance with the fire response schedule, the appropriate number of firefighting and rescue vehicles and personnel were deployed". "Eleven fire units operated at the scene, and an aerial ladder truck was also utilized", noted Garegin Hakobyan, Head of the Management Division for Firefighting and Rescue Activities of Yerevan Rescue Department.

The primary objective for the firefighters was localized the fire and prevent it from spreading: ignition of the vegetation in the adjacent grassland could expanded the fire footprint and complicated firefighting efforts. The battle against the blaze continued until late in the evening.

"As a result of the fire, a transformer unit at the high-voltage substation, containing approximately 30 tons of cooling oil were burnt. The firefighting efforts were hampered by the intense heat generated by the blaze: this limited the firefighters' ability to approach the site and impeded the rapid execution of operations". "Thanks to the actions taken, the other substation was successfully protected from the fire. The fire in the basement and administrative building sections was localized and extinguished. The spread of fire via cable lines was also prevented", said Garegin Hakobyan.

Risking their own lives, rescuers managed to localize the fire at 20:10. After halting the fire's spread, they continued operations to fully extinguish the remaining hotspots.

During the firefighting efforts, two rescuers suffered from smoke inhalation; one was hospitalized, while the other received first aid on-site. Their lives are not in danger.

The firefighting operations, which lasted approximately four hours, concluded at 21:10: the fire was extinguished. A patrolling was established at the substation.
