Tank truck overturned into the Voghdji River: thanks to the prompt actions of the rescuers, a potential environmental threat was prevented

On July 16, at 21:39 an emergency call was received to Syunik Regional Crisis Management Center that a truck had fallen into a river near Dzagedzor village on Kapan-Kajaran roadway: the rescuers’ help was needed.

Two fire units from the Fire and Rescue Squads and operative groups from Regional Department of the Rescue Service of the MIA of RA dispatched to the scene.

The information was communicated in accordance with established procedures to local self-government bodies and relevant authorities.

It turned out that at the 10th kilometer of the Kajaran-Kapan roadway, a "Scania" truck with a trailer (a tank truck carrying 23 tons of fuel oil) veered off the road, collided with a concrete roadside barrier, and the trailer detached from the truck, partially ending up in the Voghdji River.

As a result of damage to the tank, a fuel oil spill occurred.

Thanks to the skilled actions of the rescuers, the fuel oil leak was stopped.

The rescuers carried out tire cooling and road-cleaning up activities, and a standby team was established.

With the help of special equipment (a crane truck), the trailer was removed from the river and reattached to the truck.

Together with the representatives of local self-government bodies and using appropriate technical means, the rescuers will carry out collection and cleanup of the fuel oil spilled into the river. Specialists from the Ministry of Environment’s “Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center” SNCO took water samples at the scene to conduct a preliminary assessment of the water quality of the Voghdji River.

The samples will be sent for laboratory analysis to determine the level and extent of contamination. Further actions will be determined based on the results. Monitoring measures are also being carried out to prevent potential environmental damage and to ensure the ecological safety of nearby communities
