The warning system was activated: the "Air raid" warning siren sounds. Students and teachers take shelter in a safe area, while simultaneously a reconnaissance of the school building is carried out and the situation is assessed.
This is the sequence of steps followed by students of Yerevan's Stepan Zoryan No. 56 basic school during a special tactical exercise.
"For the exercise, zones were conditionally established for firefighting, search and rescue operations, and demonstrations of personal protective equipment," said Tigran Danielyan, senior instructor of the Coordination of Actions of Administrative Bodies on Civil Protection Division of the Population Protection and Civil Defense Department of the Rescue Service.
The exercise was preceded by a detailed planning phase, during which the sequence of participants' actions and approaches to overcoming panic situations were discussed.
"The main objective of the exercise is to improve the performance of units during shelter and reconnaissance operations," said Susanna Galstyan, Principal of Yerevan's Stepan Zoryan No. 56 sasic school.
Each phase of the exercise stood out for its significance - the scenario was made as close to reality as possible so that students could apply the knowledge they had acquired regarding codes of conduct during evacuation and rescue operations.
"All phases of the exercise were important, like pieces of a puzzle, because a child needs to piece together in their mind - like a puzzle - how they should behave in any given situation," said Mesrop Hovhannisyan, President of the "For State-Building" Human Rights and Educational NGO.
Prioritizing the development of resilience skills in emergency situations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs considers the regular conduct of similar drills in various educational institutions to be of paramount importance.
