Snakes around us: what you need to know
June 20 • 11:16, 2025
There are 21 species of snakes in Armenia, 4 of which only are venomous: the Darevsky's viper, the Levantine viper, the Meadow viper and the Armenian viper.
When seeing a snake, it is recommended not to panic and try to carefully leave when in open areas and move to a safe area when in closed areas, as well as call 911.
If you have been bitten by a venomous snake, try to stay calm and call 911 or 103 immediately. Help the casualty sit or lie down and keep them as still as possible to slow the spread of venom through the body.
Remember, the further the bite is from the heart, the less dangerous it is.
In case of a snake bite, you should NOT:
- Pierce, cut, or burn the bite are;
- Give the casualty any alcohol, caffeine-containing liquids, or painkillers;
- Attempt to suck the venom out, either by mouth or using any tools;
- Apply a tourniquet.
It is necessary to:
- Mark the bite on the skin with a pen;
- Wrap the wound tightly with an elastic bandage tight enough that you cannot slide your fingers underneath. A second bandage should also be wrapped firmly;
- After bandaging, immobilize the limb using a splint or a stick;
- If available, place ice both above and below the bite.
You may give the casualty water, but walking or moving them should be done only in extreme necessity.
Remember that after a snakebite, there is enough time to take appropriate action without panic.
Whoever is aware is protected.
