Rescued and the rescuers were the pupils: an exercise in Spitak

Have you ever met pupils-rescuers? We not only met them, but also witnessed how the pupils of the Basic School No. 2 in Spitak implemented an exercise alongside the fire and rescue squads, developing their skills in quickly navigating crisis situations and providing first aid.
The representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Police, the leadership of Lori Regional Rescue Department, teachers and guests were observed the exercise.
This was no ordinary exercise: the rescued and the rescuers were the pupils themselves.
“In cooperation with the school administration, we organized a special tactical exercise. The scenario: an earthquake followed by a collapse and a fire”, explained r/s Lieutenant Colonel Matinyan, Commander of the Spitak Fire and Rescue Squad.
The warning sirens on earthquake. The pupils were being evacuated, children were running around in panic and there were casualties inside the building…
Two fire units of the Spitak Fire and Rescue Squad of the Rescue Service of MIA of RA dispatched at the scene. But it would be more accurate to say: two pupil’s response units.
The purposes were successfully achieved both the pupils and the rescuers were satisfied, the attendees were impressed.
At the end of the drill, Narek Sargsyan, the spokesperson of the Minister of Internal Affairs, expressed his gratitude to the staff of Spitak Fire and Rescue Squad, the pupils, the school administration and the teachers for organizing the exercise in such a format. According to him, the topic of earthquakes was especially sensitive for the residents of Spitak, so the pupils were able to save not only their own lives but also the lives of others in emergency situations with the knowledge provided by the rescuers.
The witness the devastating results of the 1988 earthquake Lusine Matosyan, the Director of the Basic School No. 2 in Spitak expressed her gratitude to the rescuers and emphasized that the event was an important lesson for the pupils.
Following the practical exercise, the pupils and teachers of the school performed musical and dance numbers.
