Moving toward danger: Movses Fire and Rescue Squad named best of 2024

The winding road leads to Movses, a border village in Tavush Province. We're on our way to meet Movses Fire and Rescue Squad, which was honored as the Best Fire and Rescue Team for the Protection of Special Facilities in 2024.
Located next to the St. Astvatsatsin Church, Movses Fire and Rescue Squad serves with dedication, sharing in both the concerns and joys of the local villagers. According to Sasun Manasaryan, the team leader, they operate like a family—united and supportive of one another.
In Movses, the value of the rescue team is deeply understood. In any emergency, the villagers stand firmly by their side—like the steadfast mountains of Tavush.
Sasun Manasaryan says that being a rescuer isn’t just a job—it’s a humanitarian mission and a privilege. “A rescuer is different from an ordinary person in that, when danger arises and everyone runs away, the rescuer moves toward the danger—trying to stop it,” he explains.
At first, Movses Fire and Rescue Squad was surprised—and then deeply proud—that their work had been noticed and recognized at such a high level.
As our film crew returns to Yerevan, the further we drive from the border village of Movses, the more I reflect on Sasun Manasaryan’s parting words: “For those living far from the noise of the capital, in a border village of Tavush, life holds a different meaning and value. By each of us serving faithfully in our own trench, we help build and strengthen our Homeland.”
